SilVer, a pioneering assistive technology platform that helps the blind and those with low vision
SilVer is a pioneering proposal. This project connects the Barcelona Macula Foundation (BMF) and the DRJ digital accessibility consulting firm. It is a free-access website resulting from major app and device cataloguing and selection. Parameters like functionality, ease of use, user profile and price, among many other aspects, have been assessed. Following exhaustive evaluation of over 150 technological instruments currently on the market and called “assistive technologies”, 40 TOP Proposals have been selected for the website.
The initiative has been promoted by Institut de la Màcula, directed by Dr. Jordi Monés MD, PhD, Ophthalmologist and Vitreorretinal Specialist. He is aware of the difficulties faced daily by those with low vision. Dr. Mones’s experience and knowledge has given rise to the need to assess the devices not only in terms of the pathology but also their age and personal characteristics.
Dr. Monés says that "we doctors do not only cure or strive to halt the progression of a disease but we also possess the ability to impact positively on patients, giving them confidence and guiding them rigorously towards the care technologies that are most appropriate for their situation, principally in the initial months when they feel at their most defenceless." Moreover, the Institut employs a comprehensive approach to patients where the aim, as well as to cure, is to provide them with support, both in the technological and in the psychological-emotional sphere, so that they may lead the most normal lives possible.
On the project’s technical side and at the helm of the DRJ consulting firm are two blind people specialised in digital accessibility. Daniela Rubio is a digital accessibility consultant and is registered as an Apple Distinguished Educator while José Vicente González is a digital marketing expert. Their different life experiences with blindness have helped them to analyse these devices from a dual perspective, the professional and the personal, lending their opinions added value.
This project includes the organization of the SilVer Session, a meeting point where those who are blind or who have low vision learn to use the different apps and devices.
