Promoted by the AMD Alliance International (AMDAI), the World Blind Union (WBU) and Italy's International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), the initiative aims to "defuse the European time bomb" of sight loss resulting from AMD.

The Macula and Retina Institute, led by its Director Dr. Jordi Monés, participates in the form of an awareness and education campaign aimed at the medical profession and patients with the aim of increasing understanding among professionals and the public.

The three organisations promoting the initiative have created a tool kit which contains educational and publicity materials together with possible ideas for action, available in the following link:

For Dr. Monés, "participating in an initiative like this highlights once again our organisation's commitment to the fight against eye disease. In this case, age-related macular degeneration, a pathology in which prevention and primary diagnosis are key to controlling the disease”. Accordingly, the role of relatives, friends and carers is essential to helping the patient in the early detection of AMD.
