The Institut de la Mácula is undertaking a number of informative activities as part of an awareness campaign on Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
The Institut de la Màcula has signalled the start of an awareness campaign on Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). The aim is to warn of the need for regular eye tests to detect the disease at an early stage and reduce the level of sight loss. AMD affects one in ten over-50s and one in every four over-80s, making it one of the primary causes of blindness in today’s society.
The campaign, which began in March, is taking place in a variety of cultural, recreational and associative entities and consists of free diagnostic examinations, talks and the dissemination of informative material. It also includes the distribution of an Amsler grid (a drawing that is positioned 60 cm from the eyes), a simple test that anyone can do at home. If the lines of the grid appear wavy rather than straight, this should be taken as a warning sign.
As part of this campaign, the Institut de la Màcula was in attendance at the Sant Cugat Golf Club during a recent tournament for veteran players. Over the weekend-long competition, our specialists conducted over 70 free examinations. These involved the use of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), a state-of-the-art diagnostic test that allows us to observe the retina and the optic nerve with high precision but without discomfort or the need for dilation.
“We have noted a great interest in the initiative as most of the people we have informed admit that they have never heard of the disease or of its connection with age. In general, people visit an optometrist to measure their eyesight but do not tend to see an ophthalmologist once a year”, says Anna Borrell, who runs the campaign. “Our aim is for people to take regular tests and visit a retinologist whenever they notice a change in their eyesight”.
