Scleral surgery involves placing silicone explants that are sutured to the wall of the eyeball where retinal tears usually occur.
It is commonly used in cases of retinal detachment to help seal retinal tears and promote adhesion of the retina to the eye wall.
Today, the isolated use of this technique is limited to very specific cases of retinal detachment. Generally, posterior vitrectomy techniques combined with scleral surgery are preferred.
This procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia along with patient sedation.
