Ocular ultrasound

Ocular ultrasound is an examination used to observe the eye area and measure its size and structure. It is employed to detect retinal or vitreous detachment, intraocular hemorrhages, lens abnormalities, presence of foreign bodies, and ocular tumors. It also allows analysis of the ocular muscles and the retrobulbar region.

To perform ocular ultrasound, high-frequency sound waves are transmitted through the eye (previously anesthetized with anesthetic drops), and the echoes produced form an image of the eye’s structure.
