Gonioscopy is an examination performed to observe the iridocorneal angle. This angle contains the trabecular meshwork, which is the structure through which aqueous humor drains from the eye.
If the angle is narrow or presents any structural abnormalities, it may hinder the outflow of aqueous humor, leading to increased intraocular pressure.
The procedure is carried out using a lens placed on the patient’s cornea—after instilling an anesthetic eye drop—with internal mirrors that allow visualization of the angle, which is hidden from direct view. It is a painless test and takes only a few minutes.
