{"id":7560,"date":"2023-03-28T10:58:56","date_gmt":"2023-03-28T08:58:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.institutmacula.com\/tractament\/contactologia\/"},"modified":"2025-08-19T11:12:38","modified_gmt":"2025-08-19T09:12:38","slug":"contactologia","status":"publish","type":"tractament","link":"https:\/\/www.institutmacula.com\/en\/treatment\/contactologia\/","title":{"rendered":"Contactology"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The contactology department offers personalized advice and adaptation of contact lenses through a prior ophthalmological examination, specific diagnostic tests, and the evaluation of each patient\u2019s needs.<\/strong><br><strong>The joint work between the optometrist and the ophthalmologist allows us to offer prevention or early treatment regarding complications derived from the use of contact lenses.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The contactology department of the Institut de la M\u00e0cula offers different types of adaptation:<br>\u2022 Continuous-wear lenses as an alternative to the usual correction of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.<br>\u2022 Lenses to correct presbyopia.<br>\u2022 Simulations during the preoperative stage of cataract and refractive surgery.<br>\u2022 Therapeutic use or as an aid to pharmacological treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are refractive errors?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ocular refractive errors are myopia, hyperopia, and\/or astigmatism. The myopic eye has a longer length than normal, so images of distant objects are focused in a plane located in front of the retina. Hyperopia is the opposite defect of myopia: the eye is shorter than normal, so images of distant objects are focused in a plane located behind the retina. <strong>Astigmatisms<\/strong> are defects that depend on the regularity (sphericity) of the optical surfaces, especially the cornea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.institutmacula.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/esquema-contactologia-1024x127.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Presbyopia<\/strong> is not strictly a refractive error but the result of the loss of accommodation, which is the ability to change ocular focus to see nearby objects clearly. We all progressively lose the ability to accommodate with age, due to the natural decrease in elasticity of the crystalline lens and the surrounding tissues, and other related physiological changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contact lenses temporarily correct these refractive errors when they appear alone or combined.
