Las cirug\u00edas se llevaron a cabo el mes de noviembre de 2020. Medio a\u00f1o despu\u00e9s, las im\u00e1genes tomadas con Tomograf\u00edas de Coherencia \u00d3ptica (OCT) apuntan a la presencia de nuevas \u00e1reas cubiertas por c\u00e9lulas del epitelio retiniano (RPE) que no exist\u00edan en el momento de las intervenciones. Estos descubrimientos sugieren que las nuevas RPE se han integrado con fotoreceptores funcionales en zonas donde los pacientes hab\u00edan perdido estas c\u00e9lulas. Estos son los efectos m\u00e1s destacados observados en las \u00e1reas de transici\u00f3n alrededor de las zonas afectadas por la Atrofia Geogr\u00e1fica (AG) primaria, el \u00faltimo estadio de la Degeneraci\u00f3n Macular Asociada a la Edad (DMAE), hasta ahora irreversible. Adem\u00e1s de estos cambios, los tres pacientes han experimentado una mejora en la agudeza visual en el transcurso del medio a\u00f1o que ha pasado desde el momento del trasplante. Este ensayo cl\u00ednico, a\u00fan en fase 1\/2\u00aa, abre un camino para revertir los efectos de la DMAE atr\u00f3fica y regenerar parte del tejido deteriorado por la patolog\u00eda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En la nota que anuncia este descubrimiento, el Dr. Jordi Mon\u00e9s recuerda que \u00abse ha elucubrado mucho durante a\u00f1os sobre las posibilidades de recuperar las c\u00e9lulas que rodean las \u00e1reas de la atrofia geogr\u00e1fica, que son disfuncionales y que se apagan, pero no est\u00e1n completamente perdidas\u00bb.
