Prof. Jordi Monés MD, PhD

Ophthalmologist specializing in diseases of the macula, retina, and vitreous.
He holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery and specialized in Ophthalmology through the MIR program at the Bellvitge University Hospital, where he continues to practice.
Master’s degree in pathology and surgery of the posterior segment of the eye (Barraquer University Institute).
Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology.
Trained in surgical retina through the Programa de Formación de Expertos en Retina of the Spanish Society of Retina and Vitreous (SERV).
Researcher in various clinical trials related to retinal diseases.
Author and co-author of several articles published in ophthalmology journals.
ANTERIOR SEGMENT

Dra. Paula Verdaguer MD, PhD
Ophthalmologist specializing in cornea, refractive surgery, and cataract.
She holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Barcelona and specialized in Ophthalmology at the Barraquer Ophthalmology Center in Barcelona. She earned her PhD cum laude from the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
She completed a fellowship in refractive surgery at the Catalan Institute of Retina and a master’s degree in cornea, refractive surgery, and cataract at the Institute of Ocular Microsurgery.
She has completed courses at the European School for Advanced Studies in Ophthalmology (ESASO) in Lugano, Switzerland, and has collaborated with the University Eye Clinic of the Maastricht University Medical Center (MUMC).
She is a member of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) and the Spanish Society of Implant-Refractive Surgery (SECOIR), among others.
GLAUCOMA

Dr. Marc Rosell MD
Ophthalmologist specializing in glaucoma.
He holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the International University of Catalonia and specialized in Ophthalmology at the Fundació Assistencial Mútua de Terrassa hospital.
He is specialized in glaucoma surgery and is proficient in techniques such as non-penetrating deep sclerectomy, Ahmed valve implantation, and the XEN microimplant — a less invasive technique that reduces surgical time and complications while improving the patient’s quality of life during the postoperative period.
He is a member of the Spanish Glaucoma Society and the Catalan Society of Ophthalmology.
OCULOPLASTIC SURGERY

Dr. José Nieto MD
Ophthalmologist specializing in oculoplastic surgery.
He holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Barcelona and specialized in Ophthalmology at Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona.
He completed a subspecialty program in oculoplastic surgery through the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) in Michigan (USA), becoming the first Spanish ophthalmologist to complete an ASOPRS training program.
He specializes in aesthetic eyelid surgery using minimally invasive techniques without visible scars, as well as non-surgical facial rejuvenation with cutting-edge medical treatments. He is also an expert in reconstructive surgery of the eyelids, orbit, and lacrimal system.
He is a member of the European Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, among others.

Dra. Alejandra Herranz Cabarcos, MD PhD
Ophthalmologist specializing in oculoplastic surgery.
She holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Barcelona, specialized in Ophthalmology at Hospital de l’Esperança (Parc Salut Mar, Barcelona), and earned her PhD Cum Laude from the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
She is an associate in the Oculoplastic Surgery Department at the Moisès Broggi Health Consortium (Sant Joan Despí, Barcelona).
Member of the Catalan Society of Ophthalmology and the Spanish Society of Oculoplastic and Orbital Surgery.
She collaborates with the NGO OCULARIS in the training of ophthalmologists in Mozambique.

Míriam Garcia MSc
Graduate in Optics and Optometry (School of Optics and Optometry, Terrassa).
Master’s degree in Clinical Research and Health Sciences from the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
She has participated in Phase I to IV clinical trials, observational studies, and EU-funded projects under the Horizon 2020 framework, related to degenerative retinal diseases.
Co-author of the book “Retina y nervio óptico para optometristas y otros profesionales sanitarios.”
Co-author of articles published in leading ophthalmology journals and reviewer for scientific articles in international journals.
Speaker and poster presenter at national and international conferences on optometry and vision science research.
Optometry, nursing, and diagnostic testing

Cristina Romero
Optometrist.
Graduate in Optics and Optometry and holder of a degree in Physical Sciences from the University of Granada.
Postgraduate in Clinical Optometry from the Institute of Ocular Microsurgery in Barcelona.
Optometrist and clinical trial coordinator for treatments related to retinal pathologies.
Participant in international conferences related to optometry.

Daniel García
Optometrist.
Graduate in Optics and Optometry (Faculty of Optics and Optometry of Terrassa, 2022).
Trained in optometric management of myopia control at the Orduna Ophthalmology Center, 2023.
Participates in observational studies and Phase II to IV clinical trials.

Anna Serrano
Head of Diagnostic Testing.
Diploma in Nursing from the Ramon Llull University (URL).
She participates in observational studies and Phase II to IV clinical trials and has contributed to publications related to AMD.
She has taught courses such as the Theoretical and Practical Course in Ophthalmic Photography (AEAO) and the Postgraduate Program in Surgical Nursing in Ophthalmology (UAB).
Management and administration

David Bellver
General Manager.
Holds a degree in Economic Sciences from the University of Barcelona (UB).
Member of the Association of Tax Technicians of Catalonia since 2005.
Member of the Advisory Council of the Girona Costa Brava Tourist Board and trustee of the International Solidarity Sports Foundation.
Representative of F.C. Barcelona at UEFA and FIFA (2010–2021). Member of the FCB Board of Directors, treasurer, and member of the internal audit and compliance committee (2020–2021).
Treasurer of the FCB Foundation.
Since 2001, president of the sports organization Agrupació Esportiva Micfootball.

Marc Subirats
Administration.
Diploma in Business Studies from the University of Barcelona (UB) and Advanced Degree in Commercial Management and Marketing from Escoles Pies de Sarrià.
He has extensive experience in business, particularly in economic and accounting management, both in the private and public sectors. He has also coordinated the financial management of medical studies.
He manages work teams to coordinate the medical and financial aspects of various studies and projects.

The patient care team at the Institut de la Màcula has the training, experience, and empathy to address any questions related to ophthalmological tests and treatments that may arise for those visiting our clinic.
