Photodynamic therapy is a treatment that involves injecting a photosensitizing agent intravenously, which is then activated in the retina by applying light of an appropriate wavelength to the targeted area.
Currently, it has become a secondary option compared to anti-angiogenic injections for treating wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It is used in certain specific subgroups of wet AMD and, in some cases, in combination with anti-angiogenic agents to treat resistant forms of neovascular AMD. As a non-invasive technique, the associated risks are minimal.
