Spring conjunctivitis

Spring conjunctivitis is an eye allergy, more common during this time of year. Allergens such as tree or grass pollen, which are more present in spring, worsen its symptoms.

Symptoms

Spring conjunctivitis is an eye disease mainly caused by ocular allergy. Itching is the main symptom of this disease. In addition, there is usually red eye, tearing, eyelid inflammation, discharge, eye pain and, in severe cases, photophobia and blurred vision.

Sometimes, spring conjunctivitis is associated with nasal involvement, such as allergic rhinitis, or pharyngeal involvement, since ocular allergy is often combined with other respiratory allergies.

Prevention
Environmental control is the basic care for people with spring conjunctivitis. It is important to identify the agent that caused the spring conjunctivitis and avoid contact with it. When exposure has already occurred, washing the affected eye with sterile saline solution or artificial tears helps clean allergens from the ocular surface and reduce the contact time.

Allergy tests should be performed to determine the allergens that caused the ocular allergy. In this way, a possible treatment with vaccines can be considered.
