The University of Valladolid honours the optometrist from the Institut de la Màcula for her research into fundus autofluorescence and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography

Anabel Rodríguez, the optometrist and clinical trials coordinator at the Institut de la Màcula, has been honoured by the University of Valladolid for her study that compares two imaging techniques; fundus autofluorescence (FAF) and special-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). The objective was to analyse whether either can be the first to predict the death of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) in patients with Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

This observational, retrospective, transversal, descriptive study had a sample of patients aged over-50 and with intermediate AMD, with a minimum monitoring time of 18 months following diagnosis. Finally, a total of 133 drusen from 22 eyes of 22 patients were included.

According to the results obtained, in cases of disparity in atrophy detection between the two techniques, FAF is more sensitive than SD-OCT. Therefore, if we had to decide between them in monitoring the appearance of incipient RPE atrophy, we would choose fundus autofluorescence.

In its session in December, the Permanent Committee of the Governing Board of the University of Valladolid chose to bestow on Anabel Rodríguez the Special End-of-Course Prize in the Research Master’s Degree in Vision Sciences (2017/18 academic year).

Entitled “Comparison between fundus autofluorescence and optical coherence tomography to determine incipient atrophy in patients with Age-Related Macular Degeneration”, the academic study enjoyed the collaboration of Dr. Jordi Monés, Dr. Marc Biarnés and Dr. Anna Sala of the Institut de la Màcula. Her tutor was Dr. RM Coco Martín of the University Institute of Applied Ophthalmobiology (IOBA).
